COVERED TOKYO: Hikarie, 2014

COVERED TOKYO is an alliance of four young galleries started from 2010 to 2012, KAYOKOYUKI, TALION GALLERY, nap gallery and HAGIWARA PROJECTS, leading next generation at contemporary art scene in Tokyo. They constantly produce exhibitions, art event and other border-crossing cultural projects.
After the exhibition COVERED TOKYO：October, 2012 at Chateau Koganei and the art event COVERD TOKYO PARK NIGHT, 2014 at Park Hotel Tokyo, in this autumn at Hikarie Shibuya, COVERED TOKYO presents an exhibition by seven the most cutting-edged and noticeable artists: Ayako Ohno, Mari Ito, Tamotu Kido, Hiroyuki Nisougi, Yutaka Nozawa and Takuya Yamashita.
From 5th to 10th of November at an event space COURT in the same venue of the exhibition, there will be screening of the video works by six artists: Mariko Tomomasa, Hikaru Suzuki, Reiji Saito, Olta, Takafumi Saito, and Maiko Jinushi. In the three nights from 7th to 9th, talk sessions (and performance) co-hosted with Nikkei Inc. inviting special gests will be held.

Born in Saitama,Japan in 1983. She graduated from Joshibi university of art and design Tokyo in 2006 and master of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 2008. She won the Grand Prize in the Daikokuya Contemporary Art Raise Exhibition in 2012. Exhibitions include“Sakanatoshite Tsukaru” Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya (2013, Tochigi), “SLASH/08 -Gimme something sweet that is everlasting-” waitingroom (2012, Tokyo), “Look my edge using his edge” cureted by Miyako Takeshita+Omotesando Gallery (2012, Tokyo). Her works are put into public place, Sho-do Island (Kagawa) and Sagamihara Park (Kanagawa) and MidorigaokaPark(Fukushima). Workshop in “Kurashinonakani mirukatachi” Nerima Art Museum (2014, Tokyo). Ayako Ohno makes sculptures abstracted from various forms of daily objects adopting smooth texture of stone. Those works seems delicate and light despite of the gravity of the material.

Mari Ito was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1980.She lives in Barcelona. She studied at Joshibi University of Art and Design. She majored in Nihonga, Japanese-style painting made with traditional practices, techniques, and materials. She moved to Barcelona, Spain in 2006 and studied painting at Barcelona University. Since then she has taken up residence here and with Nihonga as her base she has developed various 2-D and sculptural works. With her motif centered upon her childhood experiences, loud colors and sensitive but sophisticated lines create unique works beyond traditional Japanese painting, opening up a unique image of the world.

Hiroyuki Nisougi draws a series of pictures by paint tools on the Internet Oekaki. Characters depicted in the picture are barely recognizable as a human for its malformed parts of face and extremely deformed arms and legs. Those motifs are all illustrated by distorted borderlines in low resolution and painted with brightly vivid colors. Handling conventional painting tools and digital tools in equal values, the agility of his creation leads the works to the range of representation that nobody including the artist himself could ever imagine. Mariko Tomomasa presents workshops, performance and video works focusing on a certain “form” within the process of communication in a specific situation. Conversation between father and daughter, Yamabiko and traditional dancing in a circle are the motifs of her works. The artist represent how our mutual understanding is built through the communication by showing such “forms” laying in a daily life or traditional custom.

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1987. He graduated from Musashino Art University in 2012. Using video clips and stills recorded from his daily life as materials, he manually cuts and pastes them on iMovie as if it were film tapes. His personal stories, scenes and people in the original videos are disconnected and loose their coherency. Through his physical approaches during the process of editing, his collective video becomes condensed and gains physical texture as a tangible everyday life irreducible to the story.

OLTA is a Artist collective made up of 7 persons born between 1983 to 1988.

Maiko Jinushi was born in 1984, Kanagawa, Japan.
Jinushi received her MFA in Painting from the Tama Art University. She started her artwork by making drawings and writing novels, based on her personal stories then she began seriously producing video works in 2010. Her works have been featured in various exhibitions and film festivals. In 2009, she initiated Dodge, an experimental poetry-reading group.

In the three nights at the venue of Hikarie, Shibuya, the second edition of ART LOUNGE cooperated by COVERED TOKYO and NIKKEI holds a series of talk session over three themes: “art and video”, “art community” and “to listen and to watch”.

What is video work as a contemporary art? Is it possible to draw a borderline between awesome video clips on YouTube and experimental video works as contemporary art? Nowadays, not only video artist but also painters and sculptors make documentation video as an artwork. In the talk session at the first night, two curators actively committing to the filed of media art at the forefront will discuss over problematic issues of video and art.

In a small art market in a city, it is important how and with who you communicate to maintain the reliability of information you convey. Art scene in Tokyo is not an exception of such market. The second night of talk session invites various speakers who construct unique community in art industory both domestically and internationally: directors from a gallery, Misako & Rosen, an artist-run space, XYZ collective, a cutting-edge art-info website, Contemporary Art Daily and more guests are expected. With specific examples of their practice, they will describe what is happening in the latest art community in Tokyo and the world.

How does he create “landscape” from an experience of “hearing”?
Artist, Toshiya Tsunoda, has demonstrated an alternative experience of the world through field recordings. With Atsushi Sasaki, a critic who has highly evaluated his artistic practice, he will illustrate the similarity between an experience of hearing and seeing. Moreover, Masaya Chiba, a painter and also a former student of Tsunoda as a teacher at junior high school will join them with his stories of old memory of Tsunoda as an art teacher.
